Bus Memoirs

c.2001

About these dates and after finals at uni Dubus was born. It owes it's existence to two bands Dead Panchos whom by Tijuana No's (drummer and founder) Alex paused it's plus year hiatus and came back to rehearsals and gigs. Jennie started singing (and playing keyboard) with TJNO when Ceci (also a founding member) quit the band and I (Carlos aka Bus) tagged along on trombone, basically what we've been doing in DP for a couple of years. At the end of that we got our hands on a (MiniDisc) digital recorder and we always had it with us; everything clicked that January of 2001 when Rica (DP drummer and composer) showed us FruityLoops. We're often asked about this story and I think now that it's been 25 years is the best time to share these memoirs, Spanish version through Facebook, in English on Threads and Instagram (when compatible) and compiled in our #official website, which by the way is soon to be published #inspanish again. The store is #online and the #45rpm vinyl of The Greatest Of All Time mix by Scientist is #onsale 🎶

Ricardo talked  Oscar into buying a bass guitar and learned to play it; they both had a friend from grade school going about the same with an electric guitar, and that's all it takes to form a band. That and lots of rehearsal, of course. I was already at Architectural School by that time and my younger brother Alex knew them from El Playón City High School (aka CBTis 146) where unlike when I went there now everyone was into going to rock shows. Archi(torture) offered a good dose of sleepless nights but not enough of a creative outlet so I also enrolled at the photographic workshop at uni and also owned a small record shop where a teacher from High School was my business partner; in El Paquidermo we got fanzines, flyers and all sorts of characters and that put me at the epicenter of Tijuana's cultural scene. In January 1996 my brother put on their first gig and after that I got'em to play at every chance I found out about from my store crowd. That summer I attended an architectural congress in Barcelona and had the chance of backpacking through several cities overseas; the news when I got back was that the DP had decided to change musical styles and now were starting a ska band, and that did not go well with both guitar players. And my brother and a friend were now their trumpet and trombone players. I remember that the day after my birthday I drive Alex to his first rehearsal (I used to go often and take pictures) and Rica was going from his drum set to guitar showing Oscar how his new songs went (to this day his nickname is Palomo). At some point he said to me something like "dude, you play drums too, be useful", and just like that I tried to play his parts for the next 3 or 4 months.

El Paquidermo Records, the flyer was han drawn by Adrián who.larer became the drummer for Kracneo and several other bands, if I remember correctly he was also Leonel's (my business partner) student at the same high school I just graduated from.

Dead Panchos at an event sponsored by the Tijuana Cultural Center held at the Agua Caliente tower (both local landmarks), I think it was on May 1996, there was lots of fanzines and other cultural organizations.

La Cafetera was a spot lent for a few months to Ricardo Alarcón (RIP) who coordinated several cultural activities from his 'zine Punto de Vista, we hosted some shows here and this one was the first time I played in front of an audience, a jam with Palomo and Omar one of DP's guitar players ...I made the flyer 😃

I think this was a few moments before I started playing drums for Dead Panchos 😅
